Overall Angmering Youth Series

Somewhat belatedly, I am able to report the final table for the Angmering Youth Series run by Southdown Velo.
Firstly, a big thank you to Christine and Eugene Bardwell who ran the series on our behalf from April to September.
Having run the series a couple of times in their absence I know how mentally taxing it is!

	Christine

	Eugene

The full results are available on the Surrey League site. Overall winner was Matthew Castle from AD Cycles RT. Our placings were:
17th Adam Cooke
33rd George Phillips
36th George Spreckley
50 riders scored points over the series.
Declan was also 6th overall in the Dunsfold series despite only riding a limited number of events.

	Declan

	Celebrate

Congratulations to all of our riders. I hope we will see them back again next year.
To celebrate their success I am going to organise a meal in Chichester (possibly Zizzi - my son says the pizzas are better and cheaper than Pizza Express) for the youths and mums. Please let me know if you would like to attend - Saturday, 21 November early evening looks good at the moment.

	Youth bike for sale

There is a youth bike for sale on the For sale page.
Busy weekend

It's a busy weekend in store. On Saturday it's the final "monument" of the year. Il Giro di Lombardia. The most picturesque of all the one day classics. Damiano Cunego goes for win number four. It really is spectacular scenery. I was lucky enough to watch in 2004 when Cunego won for the first time.

	The descent off the Civiglio

Eurosport are showing the race live from 2:30pm on Saturday.
On Sunday it's the Bognor Regis CC's classic Hilly 28 around the roads of Goodwood. We have 11 starters. Start list here.
Later the same day is the first Chichester Sportive starting from Chichester College from 08:30. Details here.
I'm off on Ciclisti Vecchi duties in the final LVRC event at Walliswood.

	Thank yous

I've had a number of thank yous from riders, both verbal and by e-mail, for JP's Sussex Border race. Particularly gracious was that of Paul Caton who is a 3rd category veteran. Paul writes ... "Just a quick note to say thanks for organising a great race and by far the best I have ridden all year. As a 3rd cat and LVRC member the pace was pretty quick at the start and the first climb a worry. I don't know how you climb Hartinberg in 39x18 as I used 39*21 which was my lowest gear and just got over. A short chase down the other side got me back in what was left of the peloton. The finishing circuit was gruesome but I managed to stay with it although I punctured just before the end but with a wheel change managed to finish just off the back.

A fantastic mornings racing on a challenging course, excellent lead cars, marshals, service car, cakes etc and a chance to ride with the stars.

Thanks to everyone."

	Cyclo-cross skills

Our first ever cyclo-cross skills session, hosted by myself, was held at Hunters Race. I was pleased with the turnout. Alderney and Erin baker had a go, but were hampered by their inability to pick up their bikes! More spinach required!
A copy of my notes is now available in the members' only area.

	Baby for Simon

Congratulations to Simon Pattinson who's wife produced girl number 3 - Isla Molly Rose.

	Late season TTs

For those of you who are still itching to do some TT-ing here are details of 3 local(ish) events over the coming weeks: -

18.10.09 - Bognor Regis CC Hilly 27. A popular local event held over the roads around Goodwood. It's an open event so you need to complete a standard entry form (http://www.southdc.org.uk/docs/index.htm) and post it to ROY FAIRCHILD, 5 KINGSWAY, CRAIGWELL-ON-SEA, BOGNOR REGIS, PO21 4DQ. Enclose the entry fee, £7. Make cheques payable to 'Bognor Regis Cycling Club'. Entries close on 06.10.09.

25.10.09 - Brighton Mitre CC 25. A traditional season closer, based around Steyning, where every finisher (usually!) gets a small prize. Again it's an open event so advance entries are needed using same form as above. Post entires to ROBIN JOHNSON, 7 GORSELANDS, BILLINGSHURST, RH14 9TT. Enclose entry fee (£7), cheques payable to 'Robin Johnson'. Entries close 13.10.09.

01.11.09 - Inter-club hill climb. Contested between 4 local clubs on the climb up from Charlton to the triangle car park by the Goodwood horse racing course. Hampshire RC are organising it this year. It is a club event so it should be entries on the line although sometimes HRC can be a bit awkward and ask for entries in advance (I'll let you know if I hear anything!). Entry fee will only be a couple of quid. First rider is off at 11.00 so get there in time! HQ is the triangle car park - that's where we all posed for Sky News a few weeks ago!

	Now it's Richard Parker

Following on from the news about Garth's delicate problem I understand that Richard "Doc" Parker has been suffering the same problem and had to go into hospital. We wish Richard a speedy recovery.

Velo clinch Portsdown TT League team

Well done to all those who took part in our first year of the Portsdown TT League. We won the team prize at our first attempt. Full results here.
Many thanks to Mike Marchant who pursued our membership and organised our first Portsdown TT.

	Cyclocross skills Saturday

Don't forget its cyclocross skills on saturday, 4pm at Hunters Race. You can just come and watch if you like.

	Update on Garth

Garth is still in hospital in Worthing. I've sent him a card on behalf of the club. See below. I was tempted to put "hi big boy!".

	Mark Dinwiddy's bike nicked

Mark writes ...
"If you have ever had your bike nicked then you will know how gutted I am.
My Gary Fisher Big Sur and a set of 700c fulcrum racing 3 wheels with brand new rubber have been stolen from my locked and bolted shed despite the bike being secured with thick steel cable and padlocked. the gits first made easy work of accessing my locked garden gate and compound here in Bognor Regis.

I am pretty sure that this is a targeted theft as other older bike wheels and frames and tools were left untouched.

I am awaiting SOCO but I dont hold up much hope of getting my kit back. I urge you all to be wary and security concious in case there is a gang opperating in the area.

I'd be grateful if you could give me a nod if you are approached about buying these items.
Many thanks

Mark DW."

	Clothing order

John Rowlands is co-ordinating the next kit order.

All orders and money must be with John on or before the next club night on
Sunday, 1st November.

No changes or new orders will be accepted beyond this date.

This will be the last order this year and the hope is to get the kit in time
for Christmas.

JP's Sussex Border Race 2009 special

I've just about finished the admin from Sunday's race. Just returning riders kit they had left behind, dealing with quibbles from riders about their placing. All the usual stuff.
By the reaction of riders and the Commissaire it was a successful race. A worthy winner in Wouter Sybrandy who was won a Premier calendar this year. The race could not have taken place without the help of so many members and their input was essential to the safe conduct of the race.
Colin Roshier who crashed is now out of hospital and at home. His injuries were much less than initially feared. Colin wanted me to extend his thanks to all those who had helped him on the day after his crash. I was on the scene shortly afterwards and already Steve Purser had him in a neck brace and the marshalls, race helpers and followers had achieved an effective traffic control. Colin also praised the treatment he received at St Richards.

	2011

2011 will be the 30th year of Southdown Velo and will be the next edition. I would like to start and finish the race in Chichester. watch this space.

	Wouter Sybrandy wins

The JP's Sussex Border Race 2009, held at Rowlands Castle, Hampshire by Southdown Velo on October 4.

This year's JP's Sussex Border Race 2009 went to favourite Wouter Sybrandy.

The race is sponsored by the Hunter Springs Consultancy with support from Waitrose, Geared Bikes and Wear and Liphook Cycles.

Forty-three starters lined up for the fourth revival of the Sussex Border Race. The race, which is a tribute to Southdown Velo founder John JP Pendleton, features the steep climbs of the scarp slope of the Southdowns.

The riders faced 10 climbs including 5 ascents of the Chaltonberg on a finishing circuit. Despite the prospect of the hills the riders were keen to press on and by the time Lavant was reached after 10 miles four had broken clear.

Eventual winner Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport), Toby Neave (Southdown Velo), Roy Chamberlain (Team Corley Cycles) and Sam Allen (AW Cycles) had gained a small advantage which they maintained to the foor the King of the Mountains at Hartingberg. Here the group began to facture and Wouter Sybrandy took the Martin Sparkes King of the Mountains trophy and £50 ahead of his former breakaway companions.

Sybrandy was never to be headed again. Roy Chamberlain was unlucky to puncture, but would recover to take fouth at the finish. Chamberlain, Neave and Allen were all absorbed by a much reduced bunch. It was a compact group of about 25 that continued to pursue Sybrandy. As each climb of the Chaltonberg took its toll more riders struggled to stay in contact. Finally a chasing group of six broke clear and began to close in on Wouter Sybrandy, although they could almost see him by the finish he was still clear at the line. Second place was taken by Raphael Deinhart (CyclingBargains.com) and third Ashley Cox (Bedfordshire Road CC). Last edition's winner, Danny Axford, just failed to make it across to the chase group and finished eighth.

The best placed local rider award, sponsored by Geared Bikes and Wear, was taken by Simon Brooks (VC St Raphael).

Cyclocross skills - Saturday, 10 October at 4pm

I'm going to be running a cyclocross skills session on Saturday, 10 October at 4pm.
This will be at the grassy area where the Centurion Way goes under Hunters Race. See map.
I will concentrate on:

Mounting and dismounting

Climbing steep banks

Cornering

Balance skills

Tyres and tyre pressures

Just turn up! It's best if you bring a bike, but you don't have to. At this time of the year you'll be fine on a road bike.
All ages welcome.
AGM

The Annual General Meeting will be on Sunday, 6 December (1st Sunday in the month) at 7:30pm at Bognor Regis Golf Club, which I understand is in Felpham. Many thanks to Daniel Barnett for arranging the location.
Annual subscriptions become due on this date.

	New kit order

John Rowlands has kindly offered to do the next kit order. He writes ...
"It was agreed at the Club Meeting on Sunday evening that we would continue with the 'standard' item system of ordering kit. The reasons being simplicity of ordering and benefit from economies of scale. This does not restrict club members from ordering anything they wish but there is a 50% surcharge for orders under 5 items and 20% for 5 to 9 items. To see a full list of available clothing and sizing chart please see the company web site on www.carvalhocustom.com

The items we selected are :-

Short-sleeve jersey full zip £ 28.48
Long-sleeve jersey full zip £ 33.61
Training Jacket £ 39.91
Rain jacket £ 45.30
Training gilet £ 39.04
Skinsuit short sleeve £ 51.48
Bib shorts (medium-weight) £ 35.52

Christmas is looming on the horizon and many thought an item of kit would make a good present so you should start making hints now. To ensure the kit is in our hands by Christmas there will be a 'cut off' point for last orders and receipt of payment as at the end of October.

The price of the items will be roughly the same as last time but without the cash refund (the cost given above is at an exchange rate of 1.15 and this may vary). I anticipate that towards the end of October I will be able to collate the order, including shipping, then return to everyone with an accurate cost and ask for payment before placing the final order."

	Cyclocross skills

Quite a few people have expressed an interest in trying cyclocross this year. Many of you will know that I became a convert to cyclocross a few years ago after having always rather dismissed it. It's probably the most accessible and friendly disciplines of cycling. You can use either a cross bike or a MTB in virtually all races. There is no traffic to worry about, you don't have to be super fit to give it a go and you don't have to have a licence. Races for under 12s are free to enter.
I have written an article on the website here about it.
I propose to organise a skills sessions with the aim of avoiding the mistakes that I made when I started off. I suggest a weekend after JP's Sussex Border Race. Two locations spring to mind: The park in Graylingwell or the open area where the Centurion Way goes under Hunters Race. Other suggestions welcome. Topics will include:
- Mounting and dismounting.
- Running with the bike.
- Tyres and tyre pressures.
- Climbing steep banks.
- Cornering.
Declan was 4th in the 9 lap race with Adam close behind in 5th. Unfortunately, in the first of the 9 lap handicap races Declan had an unscheduled meeting with the tarmac but remounted and managed to still finish 5th just behind Adam who was 4th. The second 9 lap handicap saw Declan finish 3rd and Adam 5th, whilst in the Kieran Declan was 2nd and Adam 5th. Declan also finished second in the two lap time trial with a time of 1:12:86. It is worth noting that both second places were behind the series yellow jersey wearer, so good rides from you both although I know Adam was finding it hard after a 4 week 'holiday'.

The scrape with the tarmac obviously hadn't put Declan off too much as he achieved a 2nd place also at Dunsfold on Tuesday night. "

Stop press ... Toby wins Portsmouth series

Subject to official confirmation, our Toby Neave won the 15 race DHC series at Portsmouth tonight. Toby was never really challenged by his only rival for the title Ian Legg. With Shaun Smart and myself riding Toby always had a spare pair of legs to help if required, but it was never necessary. Well done Toby who starts the Surrey League Revolutions 5-day on Friday. More to follow.
Richard Bevan had his second 2nd place on the trot and Declan Inglis and George rode in the youth event.
Congratulations to Alderney Baker who took her maiden victory at Angmering on Monday.
Full results to follow.

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the photo shoot with the Sky News team. Everyone I spoke to had enjoyed themselves and the Sky people were happy with the results.
Lia, from Sky, has said she will send through the original raw footage and final product to me when they are ready.
For those that weren't there we had fixed cameras stationed around the course, a camera on a motorbike, one in the helicopter and cameras on three of our bikes.
All we need is for Toby to win on Wednesday and it will be a perfect week.

Riders required to be filmed by Sky

We have been approached by Sky (yes the same people who are sponsoring the professional team) to film us training.
I have agreed next Tuesday, 18 August with them. We will meet at 6pm at the car park opposite Goodwood horse racing course for 2 hours of training.
They want to film us going up hills, down hills and round bends.
They will also be using a helicopter.
We need at least 20 riders in team kit. If you don't have any I'm sure you can borrow some for the night.
Please e-mail me contact@southdownvelo.org.uk to let me know you can make it. Or post on the forum. I need to know as soon as possible.

	Racing round up

Congratulations to Toby Neave for another win at Portsmouth to cement his lead in the elite series. Toby writes ... "After getting 3rd at Dunsfold last night i was a bit aprehensive about getting a good result tonight. Fortunatly i recovered well enough to break away and lap a strong field with Phil Sykes (vc st raphael). After spending 20mins watching each other and not letting anyone else get a lap, i duly won the sprint.

This makes it 3 podiums in 3 races!

Needless to say that i'm fairly chuffed. I also extended my lead in the overall series to 20 points over Ian Legg, after you've taken off my 3 worst placings."
It was also a good night for Richard Bevan and Mark Warrington who finished 2nd and 3rd in the 3/4 race. Mark writes "Last night was quite successful in the 3/4, I was 6th wheel coming into the last bend, grabbed R. Bevans wheel and we came through 2nd and 3rd (I'll get him next week). I believe it was Trevor D first outing but I don't know where he finished, and Ben ? also rode but again? Simon rode at Dunsfold but punctured after 3 laps, I did tell him not to use Michelins!!"

	Internationale Kampioenschappen Woesten 2009

I made my annual pilgrimage to Flanders for fourth attempt at the Internationale Kampioenschappen Woesten which was celebrating its 25th anniversary.
This is an unlicensed event held under the auspices of the non-UCI registered Belgian federation WAOD. There a number of "breakaway" federations in Belgium who cater for older riders or those who aren't trying to be a professional.
The event consists of three time trials for three separate age groups followed by a handicap road race. The oldies ride their time trial on the Thursday, us 35-49 year olds on the Friday and the under 35s on the Saturday. The road race is on the Sunday.
The time trial is over 4 laps of a 7Km circuit which has 11 bends a lap which you have to slow down. Most it means leaping on the brakes, hoping you get round the corner and then sprinting out of the saddle to try and get back up to speed again. It's flat and most of the tarmac is smooth. One corner is badly tarmaced and coming out of the corner is a question of sprinting whilst dodging the more bumpy bits. It's OK because the barbed wire on the outside of the bend is protected by some sponge. I'm sure that one year they used a tartan dog blanket. Most of the circuit is about a car's width wide with a layer of dust and dirt.
I was fairly pleased with my ride in that I was fairly consistent whilst going the fastest I have done to date. I was disappointed to catch up a caravan that decided to stop on the narrowest point of the circuit losing me both time when I had to stop and momentum. I average 25.3mph which I'm happy with. Winner is Kenny De Marteleire who averages over 27 mph. Kenny is a bit of legend. He won the sprint for the 1982 Junior World Championship, beating two time Tour de France winner Greg Lemond, but was relegated to second for irregular riding. He also rode for La Redoubte as a professional and is former ICF World Champion.

Kenny De Marteleire, on the left next to Greg Lemond

The day of the road race dry and warm. It's a much younger field than previous years. There is only six starting in my group, but a huge pack behind. Only Kenny and one other rider are contributing. We don't try to hard and are caught after 14 of the 83 km which takes us from the classic concrete slab roads (bump, bump, bump ...) onto the time trial circuit.
From then on its a constant process of sprinting out of bends and trying to stay near the front. The further back you are the harder it becomes. There a few serious attacks and it takes quite an effort to bridge across to them. Flemish kermis racing is quite unlike British racing. It's just one attack after another. If it slows down its just because someone it not attacking. Im lying about 15th and see Kenny attacking out of a bend and steel myself for a hard sprint out of the next corner. Then the rider 9th in line crashes taking out his team mate. It causes a fracture in the group and no one chases. For a few moments I'm trapped in the group, but extricate myself to set off in pursuit. I chase for a few KM with a non-cooperative rider on my tale. I'm getting close, but I know I need to bridge up soon before I blow. Laurent Levas shoots past and I can't quite catch his wheel. I leave my braking as late as possible at the next corner to try and make up time, but it's no good. Soon the gap is starting to grow and then I'm absorbed by the main pack. It's effectively game over. I slip back a few places and sit in until 4 laps to go (about 40 mins left) when I attack. Mr Cervelo Soloist joins me and we soon open up a big gap. He's stronger so being sensible I let him do most of the work. With 2 laps to go a small group is gaining and they catch us with a lap and a half to go. From then on its a question of each rider trading attacks until the last lap when, like punch drunk boxers, we are just going through the motions. I put in one last attack, mainly to kill off a rider who is nearly getting back on from being dropped. Two riders get away in the last Km and I finish 2nd in the sprint. I am exhausted, but happy. I finish 18th, which is my worst placing, but I know I have been in a real race. My road racing highlight of the year. I wish it was next year already.
I receive three trophies and 45 euros for my efforts. My thanks to the Meiboomspurters who organise the race and gave Jeremy and me racing caps this year.

I'm grateful to new member Simon Mcgee who supplied this well written report about his first attempt at the Marmotte sportive.

After a large bowl of porridge, and doing my best to lighten a full stomach, I descended Alpe D'Huez in the morning light to the start line, having strapped as many power bars, bananas and electrolyte powders to the bike as seemed safe. The throng at the start was buzzing with competitors of all nationalities - chatting, heckling and nervously peeing in the stream that runs adjacent to the road. With nearly 7,000 competitors taking part, riders were released in waves to reduce overcrowding. After an hour or so we were off.

The first major climb of Glandon appears after around 15 minutes. Finding a steady pace was not a problem as the road was filled with a sea of riders, and moving ahead between them at this early stage was almost impossible. In striking contrast to the start, there was now complete silence, the only sound being carbon fibre frames echoing through heavily inflated tyres. The immediate view was filled with the taught leg muscles of very fit riders, adding to a palpable tension in the air. Peering higher, a snaking line of riders tapered to a miniscule trail of ants, and ascended as far as the eye dared look. I quickly found looking back to be a far more affirming experience.
I was taken aback at the steepness of the Glandon, particularly as I had been told it was the easiest of the three climbs, and was pleased that I had not been able to push the pace. The heat was already getting to me and the sun had hardly appeared yet. By the time we reached the col, I had eaten three bananas and finished over a litre and a half of fluids.
The decent was magical, and I relished every minute of it, passing riders all the way down. Several incidents had already taken people out of play with some horrific injuries, and I narrowly avoided a blow out in front of me that sounded Spanish from the expletives I could make out.

I caught a reasonable group along the brief flat stage and managed to average a healthy pace to the start of Telegraphe, the first half of the second hill, which in total rises for a distance of 34 km, and by this point was frighteningly hot. The temperature the previous day had been 36C and this felt similar. I was going through drinks fast, and felt my energy draining away. After what seemed like an eternity we reached Valoire. I had hit a wall and although I knew the hardest was yet to come, I was spurred on by knowing that I was nearly half way there. I took a few moments to collect myself and began the climb into the clouds of the ominous Galibier. As we ascended the temperature mercifully cooled and I used my major lifeline, my iPod. ‘On the Floor at the Boutique’ had never sounded so good or delivered so much energy to anyone, even crazed Brighton clubbers. I found myself literally bouncing up the hairpins. Sadly, that didn't last, unlike the hills. They did, and went on and on and on, and on, and on. And when I thought it must be almost done, I made the mistake of looking up, only to realise that the last 3km were the toughest of the lot. Finally, after passing people walking, hunched over their bikes being sick, and one even crying, the summit appeared at over 2700m. Whilst I wanted to stay and admire the view, and would have relished a rest, the wind was freezing, and I didn't want to lose the places I had managed to gain. I wretched as I tried to eat more power bars and some dried fruits. Somehow I got some down, but was feeling too exhausted to eat properly. I made the descent feeling dizzy, but elated.

Another spectacular descent at speeds of up to 50mph culminated in a route that traced round the back of La Grave, chasing traffic through tunnels, and racing between groups, which all helped to distract me from the horrific thought of the 21 hairpins of Alpe D'Huez that lay ahead. However, as my milometer approached 100 miles I knew it would only be moments before steep climbing commenced once more for the final 8 mile ascent. With renewed vigour, I decided I didn't need a stop - this was the last hill after all - I needed to get on with it. I put a surprisingly good effort in for the first 3 of 4 hairpins, passing lots of riders, once again having donned the beloved iPod - this time opting for some house music favourites. By the 6th hairpin the heat was again taking it's toll, this time with real ferocity in the mid afternoon sun. Having not stopped at the feed station I realised I had also run out of fluids, and felt my body temperature rising with every pedal stroke. I had already consumed 8 litres of fluid over the course of the day and not had to urinate once. I felt dangerously hot, and noticed a rider had jumped into one of the waterfalls by the side of the road. I did the same and instantly felt better. I resisted the urge to drink from it, fearful of what my body might do to me in this condition were I to drink something unholy. Two more immersions were necessary to cool me sufficiently to continue. I must have wasted valuable minutes trying to regain my composure and when I could continue it was pitifully slow. I had seen several riders being attended to with heat exhaustion amonst other horrors. I was starting to worry that my body couldn't take much more. My mind seemed strangely disconnected from it, as though my body had decided it would not longer communicate with it, given what one had consciously being doing to the other. I ignored them both and continued.
Luckily, some kind soul in the planning department has thought to number the hairpins backwards on Alpe D'Huez, with the names of famous riders on each corner, so you don't need to look up and see riders going on and on in front to see how far you have to go. I started to break them down into pairs and by the last two, I no longer cared: I knew I was there. I brought the pace up and put my head down for the finish. The gradient levels off after the last hairpin and it's a home run. I crossed under the red arch, signed 'Finish', with immense relief, mangled legs and lungs on fire. Looking up to see where to dismount, I noticed that no one else had. To my horror, I realised that, in fact, I had not finished (the sign was for tomorrow's sprint race finish). There were still another 400 metres to go. I managed it with no small number of my own favourite British expletives.

A time of 9 hours 45 minutes was an encouraging result for the brutal 174km, and meant a silver medal for my age category. I felt delighted with my achievement, particularly in light of the heat. I am determined to get a gold next year.

	Club night Sunday

Don't forget it's club night Sunday. Details here.

	New members

Welcome to new members Sam Taylor from Westbourne and Nick Harris from South Harting.

	Winners!

We have had winners at either end of the age spectrum during July.
Our eldest rider, and membership secretary, Eugene Bardwell won his age group in a 38 mile LVRC race at Ottershaw. Eugene was a member of the previous incarnation of Southdown Velo, VC Noviomagus and has been racing since Leonardo Da Vinci invented the first carbon fibre frame. If I can still ride 38 miles when I'm past 70 I shall be very grateful.
At the other end of the age scale, Declan Inglis, in his first racing season, scored his second win at Dunsfold in the youth's race. Declan edged out his rival in a tail wind drag race to the line.
Congratulations to both of them.

A youthful Eugene in VC Noviomagus kit

	Toby leads Portsmouth series

With a most recent 2nd place at Portsmouth in the DHC series, Toby Neave leads the elite series with three events to run. Toby is also second in the South Circuit series and third, despite only riding a couple of events, at Dunsfold.

	Mark upgraded

Well done to Mark Warrington who has been upgraded to 3rd category. Mark has been riding consistently at Portsmouth with top 15 places and lies 13th overall in the 3/4 series.

	Other results

Richard Bevan was an excellent 6th in the latest 3/4 race at Portsmouth.
Shaun Smart was 10th at Dunsfold.
At Angmering on 20th July, Jez and Christine report ...
"Declan and Jamie were the SDV mob at Angmering tonight.
Both rode the ABC cat races.
Dec was:
2nd in the 9 lap Scratch
8th in the 8 lap handicap
2nd in the 9 lap hanicap
3rd in the 8 lap keiran
1min 13.06 in the 2 lap tt (beat his pb by 2secs)
Both Erin and Alderney Barker were also racing, but they don't yet have SDV kit (they should soon Tim). They were competing in the D & E category races.
Jamie's time in the two lap TT was 1.38.03, whilst Erin recorded a time of 53:59 in the the one lap TT and Alderney's time was 55:93"
Christine also reports from racing at Angmering on 27th July ...
"Rain eventually stopped the racing last night but we did manage eight races before it became too wet and slippery to continue.

Declan Inglis, Erin and Alderney Baker all represented SDV.

In the C, D & E category races Erin was 4th and Alderney 6th in 3 of their 4 races, whilst finishing 1st and 3rd respectively after the three highest finishers were relegated to the back of the field for starting their sprint a lap early.

In the A & B category races Declan was our representative and finished 4th in the 9 lap race, 3rd in the 12 lap handicap, 2nd in the 9 lap handicap and 4th in the kieran.

Well done to you all."

The latest points position for the Portsdown Time Trial League has been published which shows we are, narrowly, top team with three events to go.
We are four points ahead of Fareham Wheelers and eight ahead of Portsmouth North End.

	Individual scores

In the individual rankings our best placed rider is Shaun Smart in 6th place with Mike Marchant right behind him in 7th. Special mention should be made of Alistair Mallet who is our third rider in 17th place. Alistair has ridden all but one of the events so far this year and he has improved tremendously as a rider. Alistair is an exemplar of what can be achieved through dogged perserverence.

Mike Marchant is entirely responsible for us being in the PTTL. Mike lobbied the committee and despite some opposition persuaded them that we would be a positive addition. I think this is true. We have not dominated the event, but we have added to the number of participants and Mike promoted our own event.

	Southdown Velo PTTL event

One of the conditions of joining the PTTL was that we promote our own event. As mentioned above, Mike Marchant took on the task of this promotion using a brand new course centred around Goodwood. A very successful morning blessed with glorious weather. Racing round up

Congratulations to Adam Cooke who won the 2-lap time trial for ABC youths at Angmering last Monday. He also had a 2nd in the Kieran. Declan Inglis and Joseph Marchant also finished in the top three. Overall result for the evening on points was Adam 2nd, Declan 4th, Joseph 9th, Conrad Dinwiddy 14th, James Gleeson 15th and George Phillips 17th. A fantastic turnout for the club. Well done to all of them.
Toby Neave entered and rode the national road race championships in Wales. Possibly the most star studded race ever for a national chmapionships. It's been a very long time since anyone from Southdown Velo rode the national road race. Unfortunately Toby's race was spoiled by a plastic bag and being stuck behind crashes. Chapeau to Toby for having a go.
Simon Pattinson was 33rd and Mark Warrington was 41st at Dunsfold.
Mark Warrington was 15th in the 3/4 race at Portsmouth with Chris Dobson 40th. In the elite race I was 4th and Toby Neave 6th for Toby to take the series lead.

	Upcoming events

19th July is the Chichester March which includes mountain bike events starting from Lavant. Details.
7-9th August is the Woesten, Flanders 25th International Chmapionship. My highlight of the year. A great race. See me for more details.
20th September is the two-up time trial Duo Normand. See here for more details.

	Mike Marchant

Mike Marchant has given notice that he intends, for personal reasons, to stand down from his various TT roles at the end of the year. If you would like to take these on please have a word with Mike. I'm sure I speak for all when I thank Mike for all his hard work which includes getting us, despite some strong opposition, accepted into the Portsdown TT League.

	New British Cycling Plan

British Cycling have published details of their four year plan. Please take time to read this and come up with suggestions as to how we can support it. A cyclo-sportive starting and finishing in Chichester sounds like a good idea!

	Road racing results

A bumper crop of results in the last week.
Toby Neave had another win. This time at Dunsfold. Well done Toby! This came after a 4th place at Dunsfold and was followed up by another 2nd place at Portsmouth. Toby is lying second overall in the Portsmouth series and was in the top three at Dunsfold.
We had a good representation at Goodwood. It was a great atmosphere. A shame the Goodwood staff are still as surly and unhelpful as ever.
We had four in the elite race at Goodwood which is the highest for some time. Toby and myself made the front group when the race split into two. Unfortunately we were outnumbered by Felt riders and everyone seemed to be marking Toby. Toby was 12th, me 14th, Shaun Smart 24th and Andy Page 28th.
Richard Bevan was 36th in the 3rd cat race. Eugene Bardwell and Geoff Farrell rode the 4th cat race. Geoff making his road racing debut, I believe. Well done Geoff.
I'm afraid I don't know the youth results as they have not been published but Alderney and Erin Baker made their debuts at Goodwood.
Mark Warrington was 6th at Hove Park in the 4th cat race.

	Time trial results

We had five starters in the Bognor open 10 with Shaun Smart fastest of our contingent in 22:12 for 11th place. Pete McGuiness went round in 22:34, Mike Miles in 23:16 and Angus Peel in 24:24.
Shaun went about a minute faster in the latest Bognor club 10 to win in 21:37 with Mike Miles pipping Pete McGuiness this time. In all we had 12 competitors. A third of the field.

	Angmering youth series

We are still making our presence felt in the Angmering youth series. In round 8 we had Declan Inglis 8th overall on points, Conrad Dinwiddy 13th and James Gleeson 15th.
In round 9 we had Declan 4th overall, Joseph Marchant 5th, Adam Cooke 7th and James Gleeson 17th.

	New members

Welcome to new members Kieran Kinsella from Selsey, Simon McGee from Chichester, Adam Cooke from Chichester, Jo Gray from West Wittering, James and Tim Gleeson from Chichester and Graham Davies from Lavant.

	Forthcoming events

There are races for all categories at Guildford town centre on the 8th of July. A fantastic night out. As winner in 1984 of the first ever Guildford town centre race I speak with some authority!

  Comments

Angmering report, For sale, Racing round up, Racing at Goodwood, More routes online

By Tim Costello.

	Angmering report

I popped along to Angmering on Monday night just in time to miss the start of the first race and tell Christine that the yellow jersey had to change hands. Oh yes, we have yellow jerseys too!
My main purpose was to try and match youths without kit to fitting kit. It doesn't help when some of the labels have faded. We had a good turn out of Declan Inglis, Joseph Marchant, Conrad Dinwiddy and new members Jamie Gleeson and Adam Cooke.
I was also able to distribute Montezumas chocolates to the poor and needy youth cyclists of Sussex (and beyond). That went down very well!
Both Declan and Joseph won races before the rain started. Only very lightly, but the worst possible conditions in terms of slippiness. First to fall was Joseph who fell quite hard before another lad joined him. Wisely the evening was called off which was a great shame because it was bone dry on the drive home.

	For sale

I have re-opened the For Sale page of the website for business. There are a couple of complete bikes for sale at the moment. Contact me if you want to add any items.

	Racing round up

Toby Neave was second at Portsmouth on Saturday and has regained his elite category. Well done Toby.
Mark Warrington was in action twice at Portsmouth finishing 10th in the 4th cat race and then riding the 3rd cat race.
Southdown Velo dominated the Bognor 10 on Thursday with Toby winning in 21.22 with Shaun Smart second in 22.14. We had 17 entrants out of 36 starters!!! Well done everyone.
Dave Pothecary was our fastest in the Hants RC 10 on Tuesday finishing 6th in 25:45.

	Racing at Goodwood

There is racing for all categories including youths at Goodwood on Sunday, 21 June. Details here. There is a separate race for women. We have some talented females in the club who would surprise a few people.

	More routes online

I took a party of about 10 on a guided tour of the Blackdowns on Sunday. By the end of the day I had completed 4,200 feet of climbing with both passes of the Blackdowns being traversed. I have loaded the map of my route here on BikeHike. If you log in as southdownvelo with the password of southdownvelo you can search for routes I have created, or create some more.

	Divisional championships

Congratulations to Toby Neave on his storming ride in the divisional championships last Sunday. Whilst most of us were enjoying a pleasant jaunt in the countryside, at the beach or generally avoiding too much hard work, Toby was riding 80 miles on the hottest day of the year on the hilly Tenterden course in Kent. Toby finished in fifth place which is a truly excellent result. Judging by the 'photos (here) it looks like a lot of people dropped out. Results here.
Toby writes ... "The first climb of the race saw a group of riders go clear, me included. Out of the 12 of us this also included 3 sigma sport riders (they do the prems). We worked well together for 3 laps, then a group of 7 came across. 2 riders slipped away (1 from sigma), but with 4 laps to go i decided to save my energy and hide at the back of the group. With 2 to go myself and Steve Calland lit the fireworks and split the group up, then we got across to the 2 ahead. With 1 lap to go 3 more came across, including gary dodd, some irish fella, and jaco ehlers. These riders have been winning on the road fairly regularly so i knew i had my work cut out. On the penultimate climb i put a dig in but got no-where, then with 5 miles to go i attacked hard and quickly got a gap. Unfortunatly i got pulled back, then Calland counter attacked and they let him go. The final time up the main climb dodd and ?????? (name to be inserted when i see the results) attacked but my legs seized up. They rode off to contest silver and bronze, whilst i was pipped for 4th by Andy betts from sigma sport.

It was a super tough race, harder than anything else i've ridden this year bar the jock wadley (which was basically a premier calendar). The av speed was in excess of 26.5 mph, not bad considering the cross winds and climbs! I'm really happy with the way that i rode, although maybe if i followed Calland when he attacked i would have finished in the medals. Who knows, that's the good thing with road racing, it doesn't matter how strong you, are at the end of the day the most tactical person wins."

	Angmering results

I'm indebted to Mike Marchant for supplying the results from Angmering on Monday night. Declan Inglis, Joseph Marchant and new members Erin and Alderney Baker all rode.
Mike writes ...
"4 lap scratch - Cat D&E - New members Erin 4th and Alderney 7th
6 lap scratch - Cat C - unfortunately Declan crashed when in a good position. Carried on with the evening's races once Jez had fixed a suspected rolled tyre!
8 lap scratch - Cat A&B - Joseph 3rd
4 lap H/cap - Cat D&E - Erin 5th and Alderney 6th
6 lap H/cap - Cat C - Declan 3rd
8 lap H/cap - Cat A&B - Joseph 3rd
6 lap scratch - Cat D&E - Erin 7th and Alderney 6th
8 lap scratch - Cat A&B&C - Declan 4th and Joseph missed this combined event (probably my fault for not paying attention!)
4 lap H/cap - Cat D&E - Erin 5th and Alderney 7th
6 lap H/cap - Cat C - Declan 2nd
6 lap H/cap - Cat A&B - Joseph 5th "

	Kalas 2-day

Toby and I are seriously considering riding the Kalas 2-day in Somerset (West of Taunton) over the weekend 20-21 June. On the saturday there is a 1.6KM TT, 20KM TTT, 1hour circuit race all based on Ilton circuit which is a falt closed circuit. Sunday the road race is at Somerton and is 100KM. Anyone interested let me know. Closing date is 13 June. No entries on the line.

Welcome to our newest member Kieron O'Brien from Chichester. Kieron has already ridden one of the Bognor Thursday night 10s with a good ride.

	Racing round up

Toby Neave and myself rode at Portsmouth on Wednesday in the elite race. For some unfathomable reason I managed to get off the front on my own twice and was left to sweat for about 10 minutes each time. Actually it could have been 1 minute, but it felt like a lifetime. Toby hopped across to the winning break to finish 3rd whilst I did my Mr Plod impression trying to disrupt the VC St Raphael chase.
Andy Page and Mark Warrington rode the 3/4 race. Andy was in the break which I'm sure lapped the field. Unfortunately the results still haven't been posted.
PS no racing at Portsmouth next week.
Pete McGuiness reports from the Bognor 10 on Thursday night "Good turnout by velo this week ! here are the times T.Neave 21.55 2nd
S.Smart 3rd 21.58, P.McGuiness 5th 22.38 , F.Nurse 8th 23.15, D.Bridle 15th 24.12, J.woodward 24.18 17th, A.Peel 20th 24.50, K O'Brien 25th 25.57,F.Cripps 27th 26.10 & D.Rang 38th dnf . There was a few pb's that night so well done all .... " Toby was beaten by 4 seconds by someone from Bognor Regis CC. What?!!! But aren't they all a 1000 years old?

	BikeHike website

I chanced across this route mapping website that I rather like. It's called www.bikehike.co.uk. You can plot on and off road routes. You can use either the Google map or the Ordnance Survey one, or toggle between them. As well as telling you how far your route is it gives you a profile of the hills. I have created two maps:
Walderton to the Hawkley Triangle and back, and
Tim's Hambeldon mystery tour
It's free so give it a whirl ...
