  • Bognor Regis club 10

A good turnout by SDV tonight. Pete did a cracking ride to win with 23.29. The rest of us did the following: -

    Angus Peel - 25.37
    Dave Bridle - 25.55
    Me - 24.13
    G. Waymark - 25.27 (sorry, I don't know your 1st name)
    Mike Cooper - 25.18
    J. Woodward - 25.09 (again sorry, I don't know your 1st name)
    Alistair Mallett - 27.18

I didn't get the positions overall; I expect BRCC will publish the full result on their web site in due course.

    Well done all.....

  • Hants RC club 10

We had a handful of riders out tonight. Well done to all who took part on what was an odd evening; a bit cool which kept the times a bit slower than expected. Mind you, winner Phil Sykes of VC St Raphael didn't find it a problem knocking out a 21.25.

    I managed a 25.25 for 3rd, Ivan Prince got 26.20 for 6th, Alex Rice did 26.53 for 7th and Jo Gray 29.53 for 12th.

  • Racing round up, Next PTTL, ICE

    Racing round up

Toby Neave won his third elite race of the year at Portsmouth track to take a commanding lead in the Ray Martin series.
Mark Trevis was 20th and Shaun Smart 24th in the same race. Toby writes ... "Due to having no spotlights the judges cut the race down to 50 laps. After 12 laps 2 riders went clear, and shortly after i jumped across with Phil Sykes. With some fast guys left in the bunch(inc dave sinclair, justin hoy and matt rowe) we didn't hang around. I piked up loads of prime points, and with 10 laps to go we were told not to lap the field by the judges, because they would've got all confused at the finish. So it ended up in a group sprint, which i duly won for win no.3 this year."
In the 3rd cat race Andy Page, edged ever closer to his second cat licence with 10th place. Andy is now third in the overall points. Mark Dinwiddy was 16th, Fraser Nurse 20th, Rob Fields 21st and Mark Warrington 31st.
Mike Marchant rode the Brighton Mitre Easter weekend TTs. He was placed 3rd veteran in the 25 to win a bottle of wine and an easter egg! Mike writes ... "I've just ridden the Brighton Mitre Easter weekend; this consists of a 'sporting' 10 on Saturday (at Kirdford) and a 'hilly' 25 on Monday (Devil's Dyke, Brighton). I managed 25.32 for 12th place in the 10 and 1.07.45 for 10th place in the 25 including a prize for 3rd veteran (bottle of red + an Easter egg!).

I'm fairly happy with those results (and prize!) although they are testament to my ageing bones (I won both of these events in the mid-90s in much quicker times!). Perhaps next year we can enter a (younger and fitter) team, how about it?"

    Next PTTL

Mike Marchant writes about the next Portsdown TT League event ... "Here's a gentle reminder about the forthcoming PTTL 50 mile TT on 17th May. The entries close on 7th May, so if you intend to ride I need your name, age and date of birth by 6th May at the latest.

A word of caution, there have been 'comments' made about the SDV non-starters in the the 2 previous events! (We're not the only ones, by the way). If you want to ride, please enter with a definate intention to ride - regardless of the weather on the day! In fairness, a no-show does mess the organisers and other participants around, not to mention potentially undermining our useful overall team position.

My contact details are in the members section on the club web site."

    ICE

Mike writes again ... "I've just had this message passed to me by the Hon. Sec. of the CTT South DC. It's not new, we got it at work some time ago now, but it is worth considering - I've done so...

A MESSAGE FROM THE AMBULANCE SERVICE

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In
Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn't know which number to call. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as 'ICE'.
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc."

  • Two wins in one week, New members, Laurie Pither

    Two wins in one week

An excellent week for the club with two wins in one week. On Monday young Conrad Dinwiddy won on his debut at Angmering and on Wednesday Toby Neave won at Portsmouth in the elite race. This was backed up with Andy Page's second 2nd place in the 3rd cat race at Portsmouth.
On Monday we had Conrad, Jospeh Marchant and George Spreckley riding at Angmering. Due to the number of riders we had to split the race into under 10s (Conrad), under 12s and under 16s (Joseph and George). Each group rode a scratch race, a one lap time trial and a handicap. Both Joseph and George improved with each race with George and Joseph finishing second and third in the last race. The highlight of the evening for me, and many of the crowd, was the under 10 handicap. Conrad went off first and managed to retain his lead all the way to the finish, although it was nail bittingly close. Many partial and impartial spectators were screaming at him to stay away. Full results here. Conrad's dad wrote "I want to say what a great time Conrad had yesterday.
I thought that the organisation was superb and the ambience was spot on.
What a great way to introduce youngsters to a fantastic sport.
We have today joined BCF as silver members and anticipate an enjoyable season of racing. Conrad has the bug and has met some new friends."
Toby reports on his win at Portsmouth "In the E12 race i went from the gun, and kept attacking like a loony. After 10 laps i was in a break of 6 riders, and we quickly lapped the field. Later on i forced another group clear, this time with just 4 of the original break present. We lapped the field again, and despite the efforts of Phil Sykes, who was very active, it ended up in a bunch sprint which i won!"
Andy Page reports "I gained another 2nd in the 3/4th cat event at Mountbatten on Wednesday night. Intention was to take it easy with the SL 3-day this coming weekend but found myself in a 6 man break after 3 to 4 laps that reduced to 5 and lapped the field. The break went through the bunch with 4 laps to go and with 2 to go one of the riders took 40m lead which I was happy to let him have hoping he would die out there or at least drain him down. Into the last lap I attacked the break and caught the leader still holding 30/40m down the back straight went past and headed for the line. I knew I had someone on my wheel but I had committed myself and had no more left in the tank and unfortunately I was jumped with 30m to go by a Waites Contracts rider from the break away."

    New members

Welcome to new members Andrew Kennedy from West Wittering, Kevin Norris from Bognor Regis and George Spreckley from Bracklesham Bay.

    Laurie Pither

It was a sad week for local cycling when Laurie Pither was killed whilst riding his bike. Anyone who had ever ridden a Hampshire Road Club time trial is almost certain to have met Laurie. He was a popular local cyclist who was also an important member of Hampshire RC. He was described by one person as "... possibly the nicest person I ever met." Our condolences to Laurie's many friends and family. He will be missed.

  • Andy Page 2nd, RVV, Southdowns nationalised

    Andy Page 2nd

Congratulations to Andy Page who finished second in the 3rd cat race at Portsmouth on Wednesday. Mark Warrington was 10th and Fraser Nurse 21st the 3rd cat race.
Toby was 9th in the elite race.
Young Conrad Dinwiddy made his debut for the club in the youth race.
Any Page reports ... "I attacked from the gun, it was only a 25minute race and it would be a waste of time to warm up properly ! I quickly gained a 100m+ gap before being reeled in after a couple of laps. After a 5min rest I went again and gained a similar gap and held it for 3-4 laps before being pulled back in again. Several attacks and groups of riders tried to get away and I tried to bridge a few but the bunch again pulled it back together. With 5 minutes to go it was clear the finish was a bunch effort and so the final lap loomed, with half a lap to go I moved away from the inside line so I would not get bunched in only to be thanked at the end by the winner for letting him through ! maybe I will try the inside line next week ! then managed 2nd , place half a bike length down."

    Ronde Van Vlaanderen

It's the biggest, most important road race of the year on Sunday. De Ronde Van Vlaanderen. Eurosport is showing live coverage. So break out the Leffe, turn off the 'phone, settle down on the sofa and enjoy. Or, better still, hop on the ferry ...
Last year Stijn Devolder won in a lone break wearing the champion of Belgium's jersey.

After decades of dithering it's definite that the Southdowns will become a national park. See map for where's in and where's out.

  • Toby wins, Fareham Wheelers Road Race, Club Night

    Toby wins

Congratulations to Toby Neave who scored his, and the club's, first road race win of the year in the elite at Portsmouth on Saturday. Toby writes ... "Within 10mins a group of 4 had got away (Myself, paul pickup, jason streather and john wager) and 2 chasing (simon brooks and phil sykes). We soon lapped the field and it stayed as a bunch until the last 10mins, when i attacked with paul pickup. Despite an 8 man chasing group we stayed away, and at the finish i rode the perfect sprint to beat Paul by a fair few lengths!" Toby also raced on Sunday, featured in breaks but blew towards the end and finished in the bunch.
    Mark Trevis finished 18th.
Rob Fields made his road racing debut for club in the 4th cat race and finished equal 7th. Well done Rob.

    Fareham Wheelers RR

We had four starters in the Fareham Wheelers road race. Andy Page was 10th, Mark Warrington 16th, Richard Bevan 20th and Angus Fraser 27th.
Mark and Angus write ... " A fantastic course, even better because there was no real control by any team. I think DHC had aspirations but they weren't strong enough and nor were any of the other teams. There was the usual first lap chaos when the eventual winner got away for a little while before being pulled back.On the second lap on the fastest part (and also the roughest part of the course) at least four riders went down which delayed Andy, Richard and myself. The eventual winner seized the moment and got away. On the 3rd lap Andy tried to bridge with a couple of other riders and probably got it down to 10 seconds with the bunch a further 10s but it came back together with the leader opening up to about 30s. Allthough the pressure was kept on and the bunch became smaller the winner only really got his margin on the last half lap when everybody fanneyed (real 70s word) around expecting the sprint for second. Andy finished 10th, I got 16th (followed the wrong wheel but happy to accept there was nothing in the legs) , not sure about Rich or Fraser.
The best moment was seeing XXXXXXX who is normally goby, to say the least, go out the back on the first climb, followed by I Team."
"It was a tough hilly course which was either up or down and nothing in between! So certainly from my point of view it was not my kind of course as it was just too hilly for me.I found myself off the back right at the beginning which I think was more to do with me not concentrating on what was going on around me, being in too bigger gear and not warming up properly (the race started with a climb!)! That was my first 'proper' road race so I'll put it down to experience. If you look at the pictures in the race report on the BC website you will see me right at the back... yep thats me no.32!!!

I did manage to get back onto the bunch but I ended up doing too much to get back on so I couldn't stay with them so basically ended up riding around on my own. I managed to overtake a number of riders on the way around once I'd warmed up and got going properly and there were a few who dropped out which I believe was more to do with the course as opposed to technical issues... I for one was not going to give up!!

Having not been in the bunch it's a bit difficult to give a full report but the guy who won it did so from a break where he managed to stay away and I think he came in nearly 2 minutes ahead of everyone else. There was a crash which involved around 6 riders, luckily none of us, and I do not believe there were any serious injuries.
The weather was a bit chilly, especially as we had to wait a while at the start but all in all very good and pretty much ideal"

    Club night

It's club night on Sunday, 5 April at 8pm at the Fountain, South Street, Chi.

    Chichester Gala Road Race 1964ish

Ann Owen, CS Dynamo, formerly of the VC Noviomagus kindly sent me this picture of the Chichester Gala Road Race. Ann is trying to work out what year it was. She thinks 1964. John JP Pendleton, our founder, is on the right with the peaked cap.
