    Reminder - AGM Sunday

Just to remind you that it is the club AGM on Sunday at 7pm in the Fountain, South Street Chichester. All members welcome. We try to get the formal business over and done with as quickly as possible so we can socialise afterwards.
All club memberships become payable at the AGM.

    2009 time trials

Our time trial secretary, Mike Marchant has kindly sent me details of the 2009 open time trials. Link here.

    Sports testing

A friend of Pete's is interested in guinea pigs for sports testing ...
"A colleague of mine is completing his MSc in psychology and has a subject for his thesis, which involves giving athletes psychological skills training aimed at improving performance.I suggested that Southdown Velo would be a good place to recruit subjects for the study. Previously we have used them, Shaun, Toby etc, only this time we are after individuals who are currently competing at a high level as competition is an integral part of the study - cat 1, cat 2 riders or any elites.Briefly, it would involve monitoriung race times over a 10 week period (I was thinking of the 10 mile time trial series). Previously this technique has had promising results and the study should result in publication and a bit of team publicity. I have copied Ed in on this so he can contact you directly to discuss further. hope we can work something out.
His work number is 01243 816171 - Edward Christian"

    Cyclo sportive 1st March 2009

Morgan Lewis of Brighton Mitre has contacted me about a cyclo-sportive he is putting on 1st March 2009. Start and finish at Ditchling, just north of Brighton. Website here.

And we think it's been cold here ...

    Club AGM

A reminder that it is the club AGM on Sunday, 30 November at 7pm at the Fountain at the end of South Street, Chichester. Club subsriptions become due on this date.

    Policy on club runs

Although this does not impact upon club members, it is now policy that the Saturday and Sunday rides are open to club members only. The only exceptions to this are those people thinking about joining the club and occasional guests. More details here.

    Racing round up

On the 16 November we split our cyclo-cross forces with Mark Holland, Shaun Smart, Pete McGuiness and, making his cross debut, Alastair Mallett racing at Brighton and Tim Costello racing at Basingstoke.
Tim finished 25th out of 85, and fifth in his age group, Shaun Smart was 31st, Mark Holland 52nd, Pete McGuiness 66th and Alastair Mallet 91st out of an incredible 114 starters. Cross is booming.
At Reading on Sunday Tim was our only runner and placed 17th with about 15 minutes to go whan a combination of mud, leaves and a twig caused the rear mech to go in the wheel. A resultant DNF.
Alastair appeared to enjoy his first shot of cross saying afterwards "I reckon that was a good introduction to cross. It was a blast. On the last carry (in my case push)I thought my eye balls were going to pop out!! Deffo looking forward to the next one ..."

    Cyclo cross pictures

Our grim faced, peace loving, socialist principle adhering, comrades Shaun Smart, Mark Holland, Pete McGuiness and Tim Costello attempted to glorify the soviet republic of Southdownastan by doubling mud production at today's cyclo cross in capitalist Tatchbury Mount.
    Results:
21st Tim Costello, 3rd in age group
    39th Mark Holland
    54th Pete McGuiness
    DNF Shaun Smart

    Hill climb results

The bad news was that Southdown Velo failed to retain the interclub annual hill climb. Succumbing to a3crg. It was quite close in terms of seconds at the end, but a defeat none the less.
The good news was that Southdown Velo had a massive 21 entrants and comprised half the field. A brilliant turnout. Other members came out to cheer us on and offer encouragement. We had the fastest lady with Fay Cripps and, I think, the youngest competitor with youth Joseph Marchant. Full results here. Photos here.

    New members

Welcome to new members Chris Dobson from Chichester and Geoff Farrell and Perry Lee both from Felpham. Chris was a member during the days when the club was sponsored by Arun Bikes (see retro picture). Perry was our fourth fastest rider in the hill climb.

    Events in 2009

Please put a marker in your diaries for Sunday, 4 October 2009 when I will be organising JP's Sussex Border Race 2009. The race is held in memory of our founder John JP Pendleton (see retro section for more).
Thanks to Shane O'Neill it looks like we will have some racing at Thorney Island next year too. Shane arranged a meeting with the Station Staff Officer and he was very accommodating. My plan is for a joint LVRC/Surrey League race at the weekend and an evening race. Again, I will require help with these.

    Clothing order

The clothing order has been received and is at Pete's shop ready to be picked up.

    Cyclo cross Sunday

Sunday 9 November sees cyclo cross at Tatchbury Mount just the other side of Southampton. Full details and link to map here.
