Racing round up
Well done to Mark Staden who finished 20th in the national 100 mile time trial championships.
Mark Trevis was an excellent 5th in the 3rds race at Barcombe. Mark writes ...
"I jumped over to three escapees and a few others joined us with approx 50Kms to go. With a lap to go 8 of us had a gap of over 3 minutes on the bunch. There was a 'young un' from the In-Gear Youth Development Squad in the break so I was watching him like a hawk. As we passed the 1Km to go banner (the final Km winds up a sharpish climb) he jumped and took two with him. I just didn't react fast enough and couldn't get the wheel. In the sprint for 4th it was a hair between two of us, unfortunately I was on the wrong side of the hair." Well done Mark!
Joseph Marchant flew the Velo flag at Angmering. Mike Marchant writes ...
"He placed 4th in each of the 4 events, A 5 lap scratch race, a 2 lap ind. TT (he did a PB of 1 min 32 sec), a 10 lap handicap race and a 10 min scratch race (J covered 13 laps - his best yet)." Looks like the rest from racing has done Joseph good!!!
Tim Costello was 8th and Shaun Smart 50th on a windy night at Dunsfold Park.
Mark Tevis and Shaun Smart were an unlucky equal 13th at Portsmouth in the 3/4 race.
Club night
Advance warning that the next club night will be Sunday 5th August at 8.00pm in presumably the same place as last time. I know it was South Street, Chichester, but I wasn't there so I can't recall the name! Shaun?

Chichester March report
Well done to Shaun Smart who finished an excellent second in the Chichester March 55KM ride. Shaun's ride was all the more creditable as he was suffering with a back injury sustained whilst at work.
Starting in Oaklands Park the ride headed north on the Centurion Way to West Dean before heading up onto the Southdowns Way. At Buriton the route turned south over Bevis Thumb before climbing Bow Hill, Stoke Clump and heading back to the Park.
Pete McGuiness was 11th with Phil Phillips, Alastair Mallett and Tim Costello finishing the course. The latter suffered the first of three punctures when away with Shaun and the eventual winner.
An enjoyable ride and it was good to give the club a local showing. I understand the fourth placed rider is intending to join. Perhaps we can have more riders next year.
Racing round up
Shaun Smart finished 6th and Mark Trevis 11th at Portsmouth in the 3/4 race.
Tim Costello was 8th at Dunsfold in a hairy bunch sprint.
Over at Angmering, young Joseph Marchant was 8th, 5th, 8th and 7th in the four mini races which make up the night's racing.
Mark Trevis was our sole entrant in the Sotonia road race at Owslebury. Mark attacked, forced the split and then his chain snagged when he put it in the big ring. Despite his best efforts, and some native Anglo-Saxon expressions, he was unable to unjam the chain before the entire field had passed. A forty mile lone ride followed. Better luck next time Mark!
Race in Belgium
Ever fancied racing in Flanders, Belgium, the home of cycle racing? Two events are coming up in August.
On the 5th August the ICF (International Cycling Federation) hold their age related World Championships. To enter you need to belong to LVRC or TLI. The races are usually on a kermess course and pretty damn quick. Tim Costello placed 38th one year.
Over the weekend of the 12th of August The De Meiboomspurters (I kid you not) racing club hold their self-styled International Cycling Championships 2007 in Woesten near Poperinge. It's about 1 hour from Calais. There is a handicap time trial, kermess and criterium. For 15 euros you can ride all or any combination. Last year Tim Costello rode the TT and the kermess finishing 13th overall. Both the TT and kermess are on narrow farm lanes. You don't need any licence to ride. It's a great experience.
Tim is going again this year.
You can also check out Ieper's extensive chocolate shops, bars, restaraunts, take in some WW I sites or the famous Kemmelberg.
Mark Warrington finishes L'Etape
Well done to Mark Warrington who finished L'Etape.

Etape entrants
Mark Warrington and Simon Pattinson, although see story below, are flying the Southdown Velo flag at this year's Etape du Tour en Francais. This is what they have to look forward to. It's been called the hardest ever. Bon Chance!![]()

Simon bumped
Mark tells me that Simon Pattinson, part of our deadly duo for L'Etape has had a collision with a motorist
. I don't have details of his injuries, but we wish him a speedy recovery.

The website www.Bikely.com
holds route maps for cyclists. For example, Brighton to Chichester or Gent to Liege. Route maps are added by contributors and include route profiles.
Alastair might like to re-live his British Cyclosportive ride by going to British Cyclosportive.

Congratulations to Alastair Mallett who finished the 120 mile (London to Canterbury) British Cyclosportive which uses the same route as the Tour de France.
Alastair finished in 8 hours, 17 minutes and 55 seconds. See the full result at Full Results

Racing round up
26 June 2007, Dunsfold Park E1234J - Tim Costello was 8th in the bunch sprint with Shaun Smart 13th.
26 June 2007, Angmering Youth series - Chris Burningham faced stiffer competition this week from older riders, but he still finished second overall on the night.
27 June 2007, Portsmouth Track 34J - Shaun Smart 6th and Mark Trevis 10th. Shaun continues to make good progress in the overall rankings and towards his second category licence.
27 June 2007, Portsmouth Track Youths - George Philips was second in the under 10/8s on his shiny new bike. George was rewarded with first place in the under 8s and a couple of quid for his efforts.
30 June 2007, Surrey League Team Time Trial Championships - Shaun and Tim rode with VC Meudon riders Mark Bremner and Jo Johnston. A promising ride was delayed by a crash involving a Range Rover and Mark Bremner's body. We carried on to finish 1st veteran's team.
JP's Sussex Border Race
Southdown Velo's major race promotion is on Sunday, 7 October. This requires a lot of help marshalling, driving lead cars etc. Can people put this in their diaries please? I will be contacting you all nearer the time. Mark Trevis is excused as he will be riding it.
Cat fight
Apparently Sunday's club night was envlivened by a fight between two girls, with one pouring a drink over the other. Miss club night and you miss all the excitement.
Cyclo-cross calendar
It's only July and the cyclo-cross calendar is out already. Perhaps British Cycling has decided with the current weather we are going to skip straight to winter racing.
